Tiered Intervention
Multi-Tiered System of Supports at CPPS
At CPPS, we have a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) that helps us meet the diverse needs of our students. We take a proactive approach to identify students who may require additional support with academics or behaviour. By assessing and intervening early, we aim to help these students catch up with their peers more quickly.
The key components of MTSS at CPPS include:
- Universal screening for all students at the beginning of the school year to identify any areas of concern.
- Three tiers of interventions tailored to students’ specific needs. These interventions can be intensified based on the level of support required.
- Ongoing collection of data and assessment of students’ progress to ensure our interventions are effective and any necessary adjustments are made.
- A schoolwide behaviour management approach that sets clear expectations and provides support to all students.
- Prioritising the involvement of parents as partners in supporting their child’s education.
Through the integrated instruction model of MTSS, we utilise the data we collect to assess students’ needs and provide them with appropriate interventions at different tiers. This comprehensive system allows us to address the diverse needs of our students and ensure they receive the support they require to succeed academically and behaviourally.
Tier 1
Whole-School Support: This is the foundation of MTSS, involving the entire school community. In Tier 1, we focus on evidence based, core instruction and basic interventions that benefit the majority of students. We create a positive and supportive classroom environment and use positive strategies to manage behaviour. These efforts help build strong relationships between staff and students. If a student needs more help, they may move to Tier 2.
Tier 2
Targeted Support: Some students may need extra assistance to meet their academic and behavioural goals. In Tier 2, we provide targeted support in small groups, in areas such as Literacy, Numeracy or social skills development, where students receive additional instruction. Our aim is to help these students build skills to catch up with their peers.
Tier 3
Individualised Support: A small group of students face significant challenges that aren’t resolved with the support from Tier 1 or Tier 2. In Tier 3, we provide individualised supports tailored to their unique needs. This may involve collaboration with external agencies like behavioural counsellors or family therapists. Our goal is to give these students the specialised help they require.
By implementing these three tiers of support, we ensure that all students receive the assistance they need to thrive academically and behaviourally. We work together as a school community to create a nurturing environment that promotes success for every child.
