Transitioning at CPPS

Prep Transition

Embarking on the journey of starting school is an important milestone, brimming with excitement and significance for both children and their families. At Chirnside Park Primary School, we warmly embrace new students and families through our “Ready, Set, Prep!” program.

“Ready, Set, Prep!” ensures a smooth Prep transition by providing our youngest learners with four dedicated mornings during Term 4 to interact with their future teachers and peers. These sessions not only cultivate a sense of familiarity and comfort within the school environment, but also foster positive relationships between parents, children, and our dedicated staff.

By participating in “Ready, Set, Prep!” at CPPS, our new students have the opportunity to establish strong and meaningful connections that will serve as the cornerstone for their future learning experiences.

Secondary Transition

Enrolling your child, or children, in Year 7 is an important choice in their learning journey. An important starting point is identifying your child’s zoned secondary school, as residential boundaries may impact whether your child can attend a particular secondary school. Your child is guaranteed a place at their designated neighbourhood government school, and this right is set out in the Education and Training Reform Act 2006. Families, however, may choose to send their child to a different secondary school because the school provides a specific focus, such as music, science, art, sport or accelerated learning/extension programs.

We support and encourage our families to explore secondary school options early, as this will also give families time to visit different schools, attend detailed information sessions or open nights and find a school that meets their child’s needs, interests and aspirations. At CPPS we have strong connections with our local government secondary schools. Our Grade 5 and 6 students participate in exploration days with these local secondary schools, providing the opportunity for students to participate in learning within the secondary school environment.

If your child is seeking academic scholarships or enrolment in a private/independent school, these processes can often start in the student’s Grade 5 year. It is advised that families contact the secondary school directly for this information.

The CPPS Grade 6 to Year 7 Transition Coordinator can help you with any questions you might have about the process and they will also help you to get the appropriate paperwork for enrolling your child into secondary school. During the first semester of your child’s Grade 6 year, parents and carers will be asked to return an Application for Year 7 Placement Form to their primary school. This form nominates their child’s ordered preferences for secondary school placement for the following year (Year 7). These forms are submitted to the secondary schools on your behalf by the CPPS Transition Coordinator, in accordance with the DET Year 7 placement protocols.
