High Ability Students
Chirnside Park Primary School prides itself on the identification and teaching of High Ability students across the school. We have many students who are 18 months+ ahead of the Victorian Curriculum and each one of these students receives an Individual Education Plan (IEP). An IEP is a written statement that describes the adjustments, goals and strategies to meet a student’s individual educational needs so they can reach their full potential. An IEP is essential as it helps to plan and monitor a student’s unique learning needs.
Victorian High Ability Program
To complement our commitment to teaching High Ability Students, many of our students are invited by the Department of Education through Virtual Schools Victoria to take part in the Victorian High Ability Program. The Victorian High Ability Program (VHAP) enables high-ability students at our school to be challenged and extended in a supportive environment with their like-minded peers across Victoria.
G.A.T.E.WAYS (Gifted and Talented Education)
G.A.T.E.WAYS is an extension program that is offered to students at our school that have been identified through formal school assessments as high ability students i.e. 18 months+ ahead of the Victorian Standards of Education. The program provides an opportunity for tailored, small group, face to face teaching with highly experienced teachers that are experts in the teaching of high ability students. Learning units focus on but are not limited to: Mathematics, Literature, Science and Technology.
At CPPS, the G.A.T.E.WAYS program takes place during regular school hours, so that students can complete their extension programs during learning sessions. At the conclusion of each unit of learning, parents are provided with a report on their child’s progress and learning outcomes and achievements. Students that qualify for the program receive an invitation to register online, with fees for the program paid directly to G.A.T.E.WAYS each term. Parent paid fees cover the costs of program development, administration, presentation and the student achievement report.
G.A.T.E.WAYS is an independent, non-funded educational organisation, established in 1994. In any given week during the school term between 750 and 1200 primary aged children attend workshops globally. G.A.T.E.WAYS aims is to provide opportunities for highly able and talented children with the opportunity to participate in programs with like-minded students that will challenge them intellectually and help develop their individual talents. Both short- and longer-term programs in most areas of the curriculum are offered in host schools in Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney, Singapore, and Bangkok. Over the last 25 years, G.A.T.E.WAYS has gained considerable recognition with teachers, parents and children in Australia for its high-quality programs. The educators and presenters engaged by G.A.T.E.WAYS are experts in a given field or fields; passionate about their field and able to convey this enthusiasm to children. G.A.T.E.WAYS programs are inquiry based, with hands-on activities, problem solving and higher order thinking skills.
