Extra Curricular Activities

At Chirnside Park Primary School students are openly encouraged to explore their personal interests with other like-minded students. Lunch time clubs cater to student interests and ensure that all students have something enjoyable to do during their break times. The clubs run daily during the lunch break time, in various classrooms or spaces around the school. We also ensure that our school’s library is often for half of lunch, allowing students to come and read quietly if they wish. The focus of these clubs changes termly, based on student feedback, engagement and participation.

We also encourage students to have a say on activities and clubs that they are interested in. Through consultation with school leadership, students are supported in developing and running clubs based on their interests. Current and past examples of these clubs include:

Adventure Camp: Camp Adanac – Yarra Junction (2024)

With a focus on stretching themselves outside of their comfort zone this is the first camp experience for students at CPPS. Here, students are provided with a range of challenge-by-choice, action and adventure activities. They also participate in a range of team building activities.

Grade 5/6 (Alternating)

Discovery Camp: Sovereign Hill – Ballarat (2023)

Students travel back in time as they explore the open-air museum of Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. Here they develop the understanding of life as a child living on the gold fields and make connections to the lives they live today. Students attend 2 days in the Costumed School, discovering what learning was like during the gold rush era.

Adventure Camp: Phillip Island Adventure Resort – Phillip Island (2024)

With a focus on building confidence, leadership and teamwork skills. provided with a range of challenge-by-choice, action and adventure activities, includuing open water surfing, high ropes courses and teamwork activities. Students also explore the natural wonders of the Phillip Island area when they experience an evening at the Penguin Parade.

One of the highlights on our PE calendar is the CPPS Athletics Day held at Yarra Ranges Athletics Track. With a focus on having fun, students participate in a range of conventional track and field and modified games and activities.

ICAS Assessments are designed to recognise academic excellence. Students are assessed on their ability to apply classroom learning to new contexts using higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills.

Mentoring Gifted Kids Where your child can explore, question, experiment, discuss, think, wonder, be challenged and learn, while having fun with like minds. This program emphasises tailored, small group, face to face teaching with highly experienced gifted teachers. Using specific topics of study as a vehicle, we work with children to help them to: Understand themselves as gifted people Develop their gifts into mature talents Acknowledge and see their potential and perhaps a vision of how they may use their giftedness to contribute to society.

Students complete a 9 step STEM design sprint based on challenges facing NASA’s Artemis and the Australian space industry. AVA teams will choose from a set of five scenarios and design a solution presented in the form of either a 90-second video pitch or poster. A number of teams will then be selected to pitch their ideas at the Young Space Explorers event in December in Sydney!

Hoop Time brings students from across Victoria together for a single-day round robin basketball tournament. Students in Grade 1 and 2 (Minis), Grade 3 and 4 (Juniors) and Grade 5 and 6 (Seniors) have the opportunity to play basketball in a safe and fun competition with qualified referees. The program culminates at the end of each year with Regional Finals and a State Grand Final day.

This program aims to develop students’ confidence, teamwork and sports based skills through their weekly participation in a range of summer and winter sports. Teams put their skills to the test when they compete against different schools from the local district. Each week, a student from each sport is also recognised through the Community Spirit Awards that recognise students that demonstrate kindness, respect, fair play, sportsmanship and teamwork.
